This masterpiece of William Blake was created in 1794, as an illustration of his book of poetry, Europa a Prophecy. However, this work is more popularly known as the Ancient of Days. This pre-Romantic etching depicts a very Newtonian God measuring out the dimensions of his creation.

A reproduction of Jean Corot’s “Orpheus Leading Eurydice from the Underworld”, 1861. This nineteenth century Romantic artist probably most closely adhered to French Classicism in his work. He was a kind and generous man who died in 1875 at the age of seventy-nine years. In this work, Corot is depicting the Greek legend of Orpheus leading his beloved Erydice from Hades. This captured moment is just prior to the moment when Orpheus turns back to gaze on Eurydice. This broke his pledge to the Lord of the Underworld and his beloved faded from sight, never to be seen by moral eyes.

Phaeton by Odilon Redon of ca. 1905

This modern Symbolist masterpiece was created by Odilon Redon in the early years of the twentieth century. It depicts the Greek mythological figure Phaeton, the son of Apollo, who was allowed to drive his father’s chariot through the heavens. The boy could not control the divine steeds and eventually was tossed from the chariot and plunged to his death. Redon did not achieve any degree of fame until 1884 when he was forty-four years old. He began to favor pastels and oils in the 1890’s until his death in 1916.

A reproduction of Lord Frederic Leighton’s “Elijah in the Wilderness” of 1878. This is a depiction of the exile of the prophet Elijah while being persecuted by Queen Jezebel. The prophet sleeps in this painting while an angel of the Lord comes to being him bread and water. The angel’s wings are still expanded creating the impression that he has just silently arrived. The muscled body of the exhausted prophet are in dramatic juxtaposition with the calm stance of the angel who looks down on the prophet in compassion. The original is in the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, England.
Frederic Leighton was born in 1830 in Scarborough, England and did not study art until after attending University College School in London. He studied on the continent, notably in the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence in 1854. He was in Paris between the ages of twenty-five to twenty-nine and there met Ingres, Delacroix, Corot and Millet. He returned to London where he joined the Pre-Raphaelites and began to create sculptures as well as paintings. A great success, he was knighted when aged fifty-eight and was created Baron Leighton in 1896. He died the next day. As a bachelor, he left no children and his home became the Leighton House Museum.

A reproduction of Roderic O’Conor’s work,”The Wave”. This work is concerned with immediacy and realism, an effort to catch the unrepeatable moment. This artist attemptes to do this through loose and vigorous brush work. The result is marvelous.
The Irishman Roderic O’Conor studied in Dublin, Antwerp and Paris and in 1892 he moved to Brittany where befriended the post-impressionist Paul Gauguin. He was also influenced by Van Gogh, particularly in his brush work. He died in France in March, 1940 at the age of seventy-nine years.

A reproduction of Giovanni Tiepolo’s masterpiece “Procession of the Trojan Horse” of about 1760. This is the Italian master’s rendition of the famous story found in the sacred books of the Greeks in which the people of Troy demolished their gates and brought into their city the vehicle of their destruction. The painting is at the National Gallery in London.
Giovanni Domenico was born in Venice, the eldest surviving son of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, whose assistant he became. He worked in Venice, Würzburg and Vicenza. In 1762 he accompanied his father to Madrid, and on his death in 1770 returned to Venice. Although overshadowed by his father, Giovanni Domenico was a significant painter in his own right. His work is more down to earth and less allegorical than his father’s.
