Mort de Cesar – Death of Caesar by Vincenzo Camuccini, 1798

This is a reproduction of “Mort de Cesar” of 1798 by Vincenzo Camuccini. Camuccnini became the premier Neoclassic painter in Rome in the early nineteenth century. This was his first major original work completed when he was twenty-seven years old. He received a Papal commission two years later. He had a painting exhibited in the Pantheon in 1806. He later went to Munich and Parish where he met Napoleon and Jean Jacques David. He was created a Papal Baron and received the Order of the Iron Crown from the emperor of Austria. He died at Rome on September 2, 1844.

Homer and His Guide by Adolphe William Bouguereau of 1874

This masterpiece of Adolphe William Bouguereau was created in 1874. It depicts the blind master-poet of Ancient Greece being guided through the paths of the country-side by his sighted boy-guide. In the background figures scoff at the author of the Iliad and the Odyssey. This work is in the Milwaukee Art Museum in Wisconsin, USA.

Dante and Beatrice by John William Waterhouse, 1915

A reproduction of “Dante and Beatrice” of 1915 by John William Waterhouse. This work reflects and captures a moment from the divine comedy when the author encounters his beloved Beatrice. This is an oil sketch from the last year in which the artist could work. In this year he became too ill with cancer to continue.
Waterhouse often re-created scenes from the world of myth as did many of his fellow Pre-Raphaelites. Waterhouse was born to English painters in Rome who returned to England when he was five years old. He entered the Royal Academy of Art school in 1871 when he was aged 21 and within three years he had a successful painting. For the next forty years Waterhouse maintained his success and continued painting until his last illness made production impossible in 1915. He died two years later. This masterpiece is presently in the Art Gallery of South Australia in Adelaide.

Jeunesse “Youth” by Louis Icart, 1930

This is a reproduction of the French Master’s work Jeunesse, or Youth, of 1925. Louis Icart was born in 1888 Toulouse, France and began sketching and producing art at an early age. He fought in World War I after having moved to Paris in 1907. After the war Icart was taken into the Art Deco movement and became a leading fashion and art figure in both Paris and New York. the artist died in 1930. The Color Etching, Jeunesse, was produced in 1930 and its original size was 23 7/8 inches by 16 3/8 inches.

Sad Young Man “Jeanne Homme triste dans un train” by Marcel Duchamp, 1912

Marcel Duchamp’s masterpiece, “Jeune home triste dans un train”, or Sad Young Man in a Train, 1912. Duchamp was a leading artist in both Dadaism and Surrealism. This is abstract depiction appears to fall between the two movements or perhaps embodies elements of both. It is a very early work closely related to the more famous "Nude Descending a Staircase No. 2." This work is more colorful but shares the mechanical nature of the painting which reflects the influence of Cubism on the young Duchamp who was twenty-five years old. Duchamp continued to influence Western Art in fundamental ways until his death on October 2, 1968. The original of this work is in the Guggenheim Museum, New York.

This is a reproduction of “The Sacrifice of Isaac” of 1705 by Gregorio Lazzarini. This is an exquisite example of Baroque painting which is characterized by excessive decorative drama, exuberance and grandeur. This Venetian artist was born in 1655 and studied udner Francesco Rosa, Girolamo Forabosco and Giambattista Tiepola. He won fame in his native Venice where he remained for most of his life. He died on November 10, 1730.

David Contemplating the Head of Goliath created about 1610 by Orazio Gentileschi, an Italian painter who happened to be a woman. She was influenced by the works of Caravarrio and became the first female member of the Accademia di Arte del Disegno in Florence. She was a great success in Florence between 1614 and 1620 when she moved to Rome. Moving to Venice in 1627, she entered Naples three years later and joined her father in London in 1638. Four years later she fled the English Civil War returning to Naples where she died 56. This masterpiece of her is presently at the Galleria Spada, Rome.

Map of Colonial North America by Dilly, 1781

A New Map of North America Showing the Latest Discoveries by Jonathan Carver published by C. Dilly, London, 1781. Jonathan Carver was an early American explorer who, by 1763 became familiar with surveying and mapping techniques. His first personal expedition was launched in 1766 and he traversed much of Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota. He was not paid for his expedition and in 1769 left for England to pursue payment by the government. There he published a book of his travels in 1778 and died two years later. This map was produced the next year and purports to show the territories that Clark had explored.

This is a reproduction of “Faccia di Fronte a Firenze” of 2010, an attempt to portray the profile of Giovanni de’ Medici looking out over his city from the newly constructed Dome of the basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore. The year intended is 1448 when the dome was twelve years old and Giovanni was on the verge of being sent to Ferrara to direct a branch of the family’s banking business.
