Cleombrotus Ordered into Banishment by Leonidas II, king of Sparta

This is a reproduction of “Cleombrotus Ordered into Banishment by Leonidas II, king of Sparta” of 1768 by Benjamin West. This is gigantic canvas painting is over sixty feet wide and 45 feet high. The American artist West displayed it at the second exhibition of the Royal Academy. He had established himself as the leading London artist depicting scenes from Classical History after his studies in Italy. This painting depicts a famous scene from Spartan history when Leonidas II returned from having been deposed by his son-in-law. The pleadings of his daughter Chilonis saved the rebel’s life who was banished rather than executed. This work is 1854 cm wide and 1384 cm high and is in the Tate Museum in London.

Watson and the Shark

This is a reproduction of “Watson and the Shark” of 1778 by John Singleton Copley. The artist was forty years old when this was produced having been born probably in Boston, Massachusetts, of Irish parents. His earliest work was a portrait executed in 1752. By the age of seventeen he was fully engaged in portraiture. In 1774 he left America due to increasing threats due to his Loyalist family connections. After American Independence, Copley maintained good relations with friends in Massachusetts. During the Napoleonic Wars his finances declined and the artist died in England in 1815. This work is 229.7 cm wide and 182.1 cm high and is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D. C.

Abraham Lincoln

This is a reproduction of “Abraham Lincoln” of 1869 by George Peter Alexander Healy. Healy was an American artist from Boston, Massachusetts who studied in Paris and in Rome. He began to produce portraits when eighteen years old in 1831. Three years later he left for Europe where he stayed for sixteen years. In Chicago in 1855, he returned to Europe for a second stay of twenty-one years. He created more portraits of the famous that any other American artist and returned to Chicago for a last time in 1892. He died there on June 24 two years later. This masterpiece measures 141.3 cm wide and 187.3 cm high. It is in the White House Collection in Washington, D. C.

Thomas Jefferson

This is a reproduction of “Portrait of Thomas Jefferson” of 1800 by Rembrandt Peale. Please was thirty-two when he painted the soon-to-be third president of the United States. He was native of Pennsylvania and was taught painting by his father. He was introduced to George Washington in 1787 and he made his debut seven years later with a portrait of the first president. He studied and worked in Europe on several occasions and was influenced by the Neoclassicism of David and others. He continued a successful career primarily as a protraitist and died at the advanced age of 82 on October 3, 1860. The original of this masterpiece is in the White House, Washington, D. C.

The Athenaeum

This is a reproduction of Gilbert Stuart’s “The Athenaeum” which was begun in 1796. Stuart never finished the original painting and sold his own copies of it for $ 100 each. He was forty-one when he produced this masterpiece which has been used as the template for the one-dollar bill and many United States postage stamps and other documents. Stuart went on to become the foremost American portraitist and completed paintings of the first six American presidents. Originally from Rhode Island, he died on July 9, 1828. The original of this masterpiece measures 88 by 101 cm and is in the Museum of Fine Art in Boston, Massachusetts.

The Gulf Stream

This is a reproduction of Winslow Homer’s Masterpiece, “The Gulf Stream”of 1899. This magnificent work was inspired by Jonathan Copeley’s Watson and the Shark of 1778. But Homer much more accurately depicts the body of a shark and presents a more desperate environment. The victim of the Gulf Stream is tied to the boat the mast of which has been broken. There are dangerous waves and a water-spout on the horizon. The Victim is utterly alone though on the far horizon a distant ship appears. The painting is 28.125 inches high and 49.125 inches wide. The masterpiece is currently at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

Mouth of the Delaware, Thomas Birch

This is a reproduction of “Mouth of the Delaware” of 1828 by Thomas Birch. The painting depicts the mouth of the Delaware at either Deepwater Point or Cape Henlopen. There are storm clouds from the sea and the topsail schooner is going to sea despite the weather. A merchant ship moves upriver towards the right while two sailors furl sails in response to the rising wind. The fishing dingy is being rowed towards the shore by four oarsmen. The forty-nine year old Thomas Birch had been born in London and had been in the United States since 1794. He died in Philadelphia on January 3, 1851. The original painting is 30 inches by 20 inches and is in the White House, Washington, D. C.

A Stop, Evening Bivouac, Karl Bodmer

This is a reproduction of “A Stop, Evening Bivouac” by Karl Bodmer of 1833. This watercolor was completed after the artist’s party camped for the night on the Missouri River in what is now North Dakota. They camped on the night of November 3, 1833. Bodmer was a Swiss artist who was twenty-four when he produced the watercolor and was on an expedition with the German explorer Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied. After the expedition Bodmer returned to Europe where he died on October 30, 1893.

City of Washington, 1833, George Cooke

This is a reproduction of “The City of Washington from Beyond the Naval Yard” of 1833 by George Cooke. The artist was careful to accurately portray both the architecture of the city as well as the natural contours and hills of the area. The representation of the White House is enlarged to provide balance with the Capitol and the bulk of the city lies in the low ground between the two governmental buildings. Cooke was a Southern American landscape and portrait painter who was forty years old when he created this. He died in 1849 after having contracted cholera in New Orleans. This masterpiece is 63.5 cm wide and 45.7101.5 cm high and is in the White House in Washington.

Fanciful Landscape, Thomas Doughty, 1834

This is a reproduction of “Fanciful Landscape” of 1834 by Thomas Doughty. This masterpiece was created when the artist was forty-one years old, twenty-two years before his death. Doughty was an artist of the Hudson River School founded by Thomas Cole and was able to work exclusively as a landscapist. He was self taught and was a native of Philadelphia. This masterpiece is 101.5 cm wide and 76.3 cm high and is at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
