A Seaport at Sunrise

This is a reproduction of “A Seaport at Sunrise” of 1674 by Claude Lorrain. This early Baroque masterpiece was created when the artist was about sixty-nine. He was born in Lorraine and orphaned at twelve. He lived with a brother, in Rome and then in Naples was apprenticed under Goffredo Wals. Returning to Rome in 1625 he was again apprenticed and then traveled in Germany and France where he produced minatures. Turning to landscapes in Rome again in 1627, he befriended Nicolas Poussin and they traveled the Campagna doing landscape sketches together. He continued to produce many works and accumulated considerable wealth. He died in November, 1682 in Rome leaving a nephew and adopted daughter. This masterpiece is 96 cm wide and 72 cm high and is in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich.

Time Saving Truth from Falsehood

This is a reproduction of “Time Saving Truth from Falsehood and Envy” of 1737 by Francois Lemoyne. This allegorical Rococo masterpiece was produced when Lemoyne was fifty-nine years old and completed the day before his suicide. He began his studies when he was thirteen and won the Prix de Rome in 1711. Seven years later at the age of thirty he became a member of the Academie and became a professor in 1733. He led in the in the fashion of large allegorical paintings which disappeared upon his death on June 4, 1737. His suicide was probably prompted by insanity which overcame him after the death of his wife.

Four parts of the world

This is a reproduction of “Les Quatre parties du monde” of 1760 by Jean-Jacques Bachelier. The French artist was thirty-six when this masterpiece was created. He had been a member of the Academie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture for eight years. Five years later he founded an art school in Paris. He died in 1806 in his natal city of Paris. This work is in the Royal Collection of the Museum National d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris.

Blind Man’s Bluff

This is a reproduction of “Blindekuhspiel” of 1776 by Jean-Honoré Fragonard. This French artist was forty-four when he created this Late Rococo landscape depicting a game of blind man’s bluff. The vivid colors and veiled sensuality were precursors of later Romanticism. He won the Prix de Rome in 1752 and four years later arrived at the Eternal City at the age of twenty-four. He became influenced by the Dutch Masters and by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and returned to Paris in 1761 where he entered the Academy within four years. He became a great favorite of the members of the court of Louis XV but fled Paris at the outset of the French Revolution. He lived quietly in the south of France until near his death when he returned to Paris where he died in 1806. This work is 198 cm wide and 216 cm high and is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D. C.

Ruins of Nimes, Orange and St-Remy

This is a reproduction of “The Ruins of Nimes, Orange and Saint-Remy-de-Provence” by Hubert Robert of 1789. This French artist was fifty-six when he created this masterpiece. He was born in Paris and in 1754 went to Rome in the entourage of the ambassador from the French court. He spent eleven years there and supported himself in the latter years through his work as an artist. He returned to Paris is 1765 and soon became a success in the art circles. He was imprisoned during the Revolution and was almost executed during the Terror. He was released after the death of Robespierre. He became one of the directors of the new museum of the Louvre and continued his success focusing on Neoclassical works. He died in Paris on April 15, 1808. The original of this masterpiece is on display at the Bode-Museum In Berlin.

The Storming of the Bastille

This is a reproduction of “Prise de la Bastille” by Jean-Pierre Houël of 1789. This enhanced watercolor captures the pivotal event marking the beginning of the French Revolution on July 14, 1789. In the middle of the painting is shown the arrest of Bernard Rene Jourdan, the marquis de Launay at about 1:30 in the afternoon. The moment was captured by Jean-Pierre Houël who was then fifty-four years old. He had been drawing and painting since 1750 and had held a position in the French Academy in Rome. He traveled in Italy and published travel books in the 1780′s. The original watercolor is 40.5 cm wide and 37.8 cm high.

The Return of Marcus Sextus

This is a reproduction of “The Return of Marcus Sextus” of 1799 by Baron Pierre-Narcisse Guerin. This masterpiece was a success at the Salon of 1799 being an allegory of the return of the the émigrés following the extremes of the Terror during the French Revolution. Marcus Sextus is a fictional character returning home from having fled the proscriptions of the Roman dictator Sulla. He returns to find his wife has died and his daughter is beside herself with grief. The artist was twenty-five years old when he created this masterpiece and he was able to study in Italy after the sensation caused by this painting. He continued popular through the Napoleonic Period and in the Restoration as well. He became director of the French Academy in Rome in 1822 and was created Baron Guerin in 1828. In an effort to regain his broken health, Guerin returned to Rome in 1833 where he died on July 6. This masterpiece measures 243 cm wide and 217 cm high. It is in the Musee de Louvre, Paris.

Ossian on the Bank of the Lora

This is a reproduction of “Ossian on the Bank of the Lora invoking the Gods to the Strains of a Harp” by Francois Pascal Simon Gerard of 1801. This French baron was thirty-one when he created this masterpiece. He was born in Rome of a French baron and an Italian lady. He studied under David and became involved in the French Revolution. At the same time he rose in the estimation of art connoisseurs and he became known as one of the foremost portraitists by 1799. He was aghast at the rise of Romanticism after 1815 and died on January 11, 1837. This painting is based on the Poem of Ossian which was an early nineteenth century forgery which was largely believed by an entire generation including Jefferson, Napoleon and Goethe. The painting is 180.5 cm wide and 198.5 cm high. The masterpiece is currently in the Kuntstalle, Hamburg, Germany.

Bonaparte at the Bridge of Arcole

This is a reproduction of “Bonaparte at the Bridge of Arcole” by Antoine-Jean Gros of 1801. It depicts the masterful victory of Napoleon against the Austrians during their third attempt to raise the siege of Mantua in 1796. The painting, along with several others, depicts a crucial moment on the first day of the battle in which Napoleon seized the Tri-color and exposed himself to withering Austrian fire in an effort to inspire his men. Bonaparte eventually won the battle and campaign. The painting is 59 cm wide and 73 cm high. The masterpiece is currently in Louvre, Paris.

Justice and Vengence Pursuing Crime

This is a reproduction of “Justice and Divine Vengence Pursuing Crime” by Pierre-Paul Prud’hon of 1808. This French Romanticist was best known for his allegories of which this is his finest masterpiece. He went to Italy in 1784 and furthered his studies so that when he returned to Paris three years later he became a favorite at the court of Napoleon. He received the Legion of Honor for “Justice and Vengence” in 1808 and was a strong influence on the later work of Gericault. He survived the Napoleonic regime but was unhinged by the suicide of his mistress in 1821. He died two years later.
