Tobias Fishing in the Presence of the Archangel Raphael

This is a reproduction of “Tobias Fishing in the Presence of the Archangel Raphael” of 1752 by Francesco Guardi.  Francesco Guardi was one of the last of the Venetian school of painting and was forty years old when he produced this masterpiece.  His most important works date from the years following this effort and his quick brushwork was to have an influence on the French Impressionists of the following century.  He died in 1793, four years before the death of the Venetian Republic.  This painting is in the Church of the Angel Raphael in Venice and measures 140 cm wide and 80 cm high.

Ovid Banished from Rome, J. M. William Turner, 1838

This is a reproduction of “Ovid Banished from Rome” of 1838 by J. M. William Turner.  The infamous Roman author of erotic poetry had often irritated Augustus who was intent on restoring the "old morals" to the Roman Empire.  In the scandal over his own daughter’s infidelities, Publius Ovidius Naso was exiled from Rome to the barbaric lands on the shore of the Black Sea where he died after ten years.  This masterpiece was produced when the artist was sixty-three years old and well advanced into the eccentricity which marked his life after the death of his father.  He had repeated bouts of depression and died twelve years after completing this painting.  The original painting is 49.2 inches wide and 37.24 inches wide and resides in a private collection.

Sketch of Constance on the Bodensee, J. M. William Turner, 1842

This is a reproduction of “Sketch of Constance on the Bodensee” by J. M William Turner of 1842.  This master artist was one of the foremost English Romantic painters of all time.  He was controversial in his own day but he raised the art of landscape to rival that genre of historical painting.  He not only created wonderful oils, but he also was a master of watercolors and printing.  He created this wonderful work at the age of sixty-seven.  He had receive formal training at the Royal Academy of Art from the age of fourteen and within eight years he was receiving enough patronage to insure his career in art.  He died in 1851 in London.  This masterpiece is in the British Museum, London.

The Night Café by Vincent van Gogh, 1888

This is a reproduction of “The Night Café” by Vincent Van Gogh. He created the work in Arles in September, 1888 and it is a depiction of the interior of the Café de la Gare. The artist had a room there and the establishment catered to night people who were down on their luck. It was open through the night and some of the clientele would sleep the night away slumped in their places. The use of vivid colors were a means of expressing the emotions the artist desired for the work. The artist was thirty-five years old when he created the work, two years before his death. The masterpiece is currently in the possession of the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, Connecticut.

Cranes Take Off by Jozef Chelmonski, 1870

This is a reproduction of “Cranes Take Off” of 1870 by Jozef Marian Chelmonski.  After being taught drawing by his father, Jozef Chelmonski entered the Warsaw Drawing Class in 1867 when he was eighteen.  He moved to Munich when he was twenty-two where he studied further with Polish painters there.  In 1872 he toured Polish lands under Russian administration and painted mostly landscapes.  He went to Paris three years later and became very popular.  He returned to live out his days in Poland in 1887 and he died there in 1914. This masterpiece is in the National Museum in Krakow, Poland.

Woman with Parasol (Madame Monet and her son), Claude Monet, 1875

This a reproduction of Claude Monet’s “Woman with Parasol” of 1875.  Oscar Claude Monet was born in 1840 Paris and founded the Impressionist movement in fine art.  At the age of seventeen he began painting "en plein air", an outdoor method of painting in which gestural and suggestive use of oils is made.  After two years of military service in Algeria, Monet returned to Paris and painting and initiated the Impressionist style with collaborators, Renoir, Bazille and Sisley.  He married Camille Doncieux in 1870 and painter her in several works until her death in 1879.  This "Woman with Parasol" is one of those.  This masterpiece is on display at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D. C.

Der Einspanner, Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, 1880

This a reproduction of Henri Toulouse-Lautrec’s 1880 masterpiece “Der Einspanner” or “The One-horse Carriage” of 1880.  This is one of Toulouse-Lautrec’s earliest paintings.  He was brought back to his birthplace of Albi from Paris when he was eleven to treat a growing list of congenital conditions.  At 13 and 14 respectively his legs were broken and they did not heal correctly or grow further.  Restricted from many activities by his unusual lack of height, Toulouse-Lautrec dedicated himself to his art and become one of the most recognizable artists of the late Nineteenth Century.  He died on September 9, 1901. This masterpiece measures 27 x 35 centimeters and is in the Musee Toulouse-Lautrec in Albi, France.

The Water Sprite by Ernst Josephson, 1882

This a reproduction of Ernst Josephson’s 1882 masterpiece, “The Water Sprite” or “Strömkarlen” in Swedish.  Creating this masterpiece at the age of thirty-one, Josephson was from a prominent Jewish family in Sweden.  He contracted syphilis and became mentally ill in 1888 while in Brittany.  Plagued by religious hallucinations and delusions, he was returned to Uppsala where he was diagnosed with Schizophrenia.  He continued to paint and also wrote poetry.  He died in Stockholm, the city of his birth, on November 22, 1906.  This masterpiece is currently at the National Museum of Sweden.

Badende und weißes Pferd im Fluß, 1883, Georges-Pierre Seurat

This is a reproduction of Georges-Pierre Seurat’s “Bathers and White Horses in the River” of 1883.  This French master was born in Paris is 1859.  He attneded the Ecole des Beaux-Arts during ages nineteen and twenty and in 1883 produced his first major painting.  Rejected by the salon system, he founded the Societe des Artistes Independants in 1884 and produced his most popular masterpiece in 1886 after two years of production.  He moved into a quieter studio where he lived with a model who bore him his son before his death on March 29, 1891.  Seurat’s work became some of the most familiar of the nineteenth century and this masterpiece is an oil on wood.  This painting is in the National Gallery of Art.
