Marketplace in an Italian Town

This is a reproduction of “Marketplace in an Italian Town with itinerant toothpuller” by Johannes Lingelbach, 1651. The artist was twenty-nine years old when he created this masterpiece. He was a Dutch painter born in Frankfurt, Germany and moved with his father to Amsterdam when he was twelve. In his mid twenties he traveled in Italy where this masterpiece was created. He returned to Amsterdam in 1653 and married. His work showed considerable influence from Caravaggio and its popularity led to a deep influence of chiaroscuro on later Dutch artists. He died in Amsterdam in 1674. This masterpiece is 86 cm wide and 68.5 cm high and is in the Rijksuseum, Amsterdam.

Departure to the Hunt

This is a reproduction of “Departure to the Hunt” of 1652 by Paulus Potter. The artist was twenty-seven years old when he created this masterpiece. He was a Dutch painter born in Enkhuizen who trained with his father in Amsterdam. At twenty-four he moved to the Hague where he married and was introduced to the Dutch elite. He became quite popular for his landscapes and paintings in natural settings. These were lauded in the 19th century as precursors of Romanticism. He died of tuberculosis before January 17, 1654 when he was buried. This masterpiece is in the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin.

A Seaport at Sunrise

This is a reproduction of “A Seaport at Sunrise” of 1674 by Claude Lorrain. This early Baroque masterpiece was created when the artist was about sixty-nine. He was born in Lorraine and orphaned at twelve. He lived with a brother, in Rome and then in Naples was apprenticed under Goffredo Wals. Returning to Rome in 1625 he was again apprenticed and then traveled in Germany and France where he produced minatures. Turning to landscapes in Rome again in 1627, he befriended Nicolas Poussin and they traveled the Campagna doing landscape sketches together. He continued to produce many works and accumulated considerable wealth. He died in November, 1682 in Rome leaving a nephew and adopted daughter. This masterpiece is 96 cm wide and 72 cm high and is in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich.

Allegory of Water

This is a reproduction of “Allegory of Water” of about 1700 by Jeronimo Ezquerra. This Baroque masterpiece was created by the artist when he was about forty years old. He was court painter to Philip V and also was a highly respected art appraiser. This work was one of four allegories of the elements, Earth, Air, Fire and Water, for Palacio del Buen Retiro. The artist died in 1733. This work is 160 cm wide and 248 cm high and is in the Museo del Prado in Madrid.

View of the Forum of Rome, 1732

This is a reproduction of “View of the Forum of Rome” of 1732 by Francesco Sabatini. This masterpiece is gouache on cardboard and signed in the lower right corner. It appears to be the very early work of Frncesco Sabatini who was born in Palermo, Sicily and studied architecture in Rome. In 1752 he participated in the construction of the Caserta Palace for the king of Naples and when he became King Charles III of Spain eight years later, Sabatini was called to Madrid. Royal patronage gained him entrance into the Academia Real de Bellas Artes de San Fernando and appointment as Great Master of Royal Works. He designed and built many building during his long career which ended only in his death I 1792 in Madrid. This work is 47 cm wide and 34 cm high.

View of the Parthenon from the Propylea

This is a reproduction of “View of the Parthenon from the Propylea” of 1821 by Edward Dodwell. This image appeared in Dodwell’s volume Views in Greece which was published in London in 1821, the year of the Greek War of Independence. It shows the contemporary buildings which were on the Akropolis during the 375 year Turkish occupation of Athens. The Irish-born artist was fifty-four when the volume was published and had been living and traveling in Italy and Greece since 1801. He died in Rome on May 13, 1832.

Election of Stanislaw II

This is a reproduction of “The Election of Stanislaw II August at Wola in 1746″ by Bernardo Bellotto of 1776. This Venetian artist was fifty-two when he created this spanning panoramic vista of the field at Wola during the election of the king of Poland. He had worked in Rome and for Charles Emmaunel III of Savoy and in 1747 at the age of about twenty-five he moved to Dresden at the invitation of August III, king of Poland. The Austrian empress Maria Theresa invited him to work in Vienna in 1758 which he did and then moved on to work in Munich and again in Dresden. In 1764 he became court painter to Stanislaw II of Poland in Warsaw where he remained and died in 1780. This work is in the National Museum in Poznan, Poland.

Blind Man’s Bluff

This is a reproduction of “Blindekuhspiel” of 1776 by Jean-Honoré Fragonard. This French artist was forty-four when he created this Late Rococo landscape depicting a game of blind man’s bluff. The vivid colors and veiled sensuality were precursors of later Romanticism. He won the Prix de Rome in 1752 and four years later arrived at the Eternal City at the age of twenty-four. He became influenced by the Dutch Masters and by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and returned to Paris in 1761 where he entered the Academy within four years. He became a great favorite of the members of the court of Louis XV but fled Paris at the outset of the French Revolution. He lived quietly in the south of France until near his death when he returned to Paris where he died in 1806. This work is 198 cm wide and 216 cm high and is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D. C.

Cascade in the Tuauru Valley, Tahiti

This is a reproduction of “A Cascade in the Tuauru Valley, Tahiti” of 1773 by William Hodges. This painting was one of many which the artist completed while on the second voyage of James Cook from 1772 to 1775. Hodges was born in London and embarked on the voyage when he was twenty-eight years old. He had supported himself as a painter of theatrical scenes and was on salary by the Admiralty during and after the voyage so that he could complete his paintings. His bold use of light and shadow anticipated the later Romantic movement. His artistic career was ended when he displeased the Duke of York in 1795 and he died in Devonshire two years later at the age of fifty-three. This work is 64.1 cm wide and 49.9 cm high and is at the National Maritime Museum in London.

Fisher Family at Nighttime

This is a reproduction of “The Fisher Family at Nighttime Campfire with Turbulent Sea” of 1778 by Jakob Philipp Hackert. The artist was fifty-one years old when this was produced. He was born in Brandenburg where he was trained by his artist father and uncle. He studied at the Akademie der Kunste in Berlin and became very proficient in painting landscapes and murals. He relocated to Italy, mostly in Rome and Naples, in 1768 and in 1786 he entered the court of Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies in Naples. He received commissions from the empress of Russia and the king of France. He fled Naples in 1799 to Florence where he died in 1807. This work is 87 cm wide and 64.5 cm high and is in the Kunsthalle in Hamburg, Germany.
