Cincinnatus Abandons the Plow

Academician / Greco-Roman / Neoclassical / Paintings (Reproductions) / Spanish - 1 year ago - troycapc

Cincinnatus Abandons the Plow

This is a reproduction of ” Cincinato abandona el arado para dictar leyes a Roma ” by Juan Antonio Ribera of 1806.  This is a pivotal scene from the history of the early Roman Republic.  At the urging of his countrymen during an existential crisis, Cincinnatus unwillingly abandons his simple farm to take up command of the Roman Republic.  The constitution of the early democracy had a provision for one man to take total control of the state and this burden Cincinnatus took up.  Ribera was twenty-seven when he produced this masterpiece which is a fine example of his Neoclassical style.  He studied in Paris under David and in 1811 became court painter to the exiled Charles IV of Spain.  He continued as court painter under Ferdinand VII and Isabella II and directed what became the Museo del Prado for three years before his death in Madrid in 1860.

Inspirational prints / Paintings (Reproductions) / Romanticism / Spanish - 1 year ago - troycapc

Tres de Mayo, 1815

This is a reproduction of “Los fusilamientos del tres de mayo” by Francisco Goya of 1815.  Goya was commemorating the Spanish resistance to Napoleon’s French forces of occupation in 1808.  It was commissioned by the provisional Spanish government at the suggestion of the artist.  This painting has gained iconic status as a powerful image of the horrors of war, particularly warfare directed against defenseless civilians.  Because it breaks so profoundly from the conventions of the past, it has often been claimed to be the first painting of the modern era.  The original of this masterpiece is in the Museo del Prado in Madrid and is 347 cm wide and 268cm high.

The Forge, Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, ca. 1817

The Forge, Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, ca. 1817

This is a reproduction of “The Forge” by Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, created between 1815 and 1820.  This dramatic work can be seen as a glorification of the harsh work of pre-industrial workers.  The pervasive darkness, vigorous brushstrokes and monumental size gives an unusual dignity to the back-breaking labor and is reminiscent of the depiction of the mythological forge of Hephaistos.  This stark depiction has little distraction from the coordinated work of the blacksmiths.  This masterpiece is in the Frick Collection, New York City.
