View of the Forum of Rome, 1732

This is a reproduction of “View of the Forum of Rome” of 1732 by Francesco Sabatini.  This masterpiece is gouache on cardboard and signed in the lower right corner.  It appears to be the very early work of Frncesco Sabatini who was born in Palermo, Sicily and studied architecture in Rome.  In 1752 he participated in the construction of the Caserta Palace for the king of Naples and when he became King Charles III of Spain eight years later, Sabatini was called to Madrid.  Royal patronage gained him entrance into the Academia Real de Bellas Artes de San Fernando and appointment as Great Master of Royal Works.  He designed and built many building during his long career which ended only in his death I 1792 in Madrid.  This work is 47 cm wide and 34 cm high.

Achilles and the Centaur Chiron

This is a reproduction of “Achilles and the Centaur Chiron” of 1746 by Pompeo Batoni.  According to Greek Mythology Achilles was trained in warfare by the wise centaur Chiron.  This became a favorite subject during the Renaissance and continued into the Baroque.  Batoni was thirty-eight when he created this masterpiece having been born in Lucca and apprentice in Rome from the age of nineteen.  He was gained a patron in Gabrielli di Gubbio five years later and his fame spread.  He became a member of the Accademia di San Luca in 1741 and became an Austrian noble for his double painting of Joseph II and Leopold II.  He died in Rome in 1787.  This masterpiece is 127 cm wide and 159 cm high and is in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.

Blind Man’s Bluff

Blind Man's Bluff

This is a reproduction of “Blindekuhspiel” of 1776 by Jean-Honoré Fragonard.  This French artist was forty-four when he created this Late Rococo landscape depicting a game of blind man’s bluff.  The vivid colors and veiled sensuality were precursors of later Romanticism.  He won the Prix de Rome in 1752 and four years later arrived at the Eternal City at the age of twenty-four.  He became influenced by the Dutch Masters and by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and returned to Paris in 1761 where he entered the Academy within four years.  He became a great favorite of the members of the court of Louis XV but fled Paris at the outset of the French Revolution.  He lived quietly in the south of France until near his death when he returned to Paris where he died in 1806.  This work is 198 cm wide and 216 cm high and is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D. C.

The Shipwreck

This is a reproduction of “The Shipwreck” of 1775 by Hendrik Kobell.  This Dutch artist was twenty-four years old when this was produced having been born in Rotterdam.  He had studied in Rotterdam and England but returned to the Netherlands in 1770 when he began to study in Amsterdam under Jacob de Vos and Cornelis Ploos van Amstel.  He was soon elected to the Academy after which he settled in Rotterdam.  His oils and watercolors were noted for their realism.  He was quite successful and died in Rotterdam on August 3, 1799.  This work is 134 cm wide and 92 cm high and is at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Fisher Family at Nighttime

This is a reproduction of “The Fisher Family at Nighttime Campfire with Turbulent Sea” of 1778 by Jakob Philipp Hackert.  The artist was fifty-one years old when this was produced.  He was born in Brandenburg where he was trained by his artist father and uncle.  He studied at the Akademie der Kunste in Berlin and became very proficient in painting landscapes and murals.  He relocated to Italy, mostly in Rome and Naples, in 1768 and in 1786 he entered the court of Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies in Naples.  He received commissions from the empress of Russia and the king of France.  He fled Naples in 1799 to Florence where he died in 1807.  This work is 87 cm wide and 64.5 cm high and is in the Kunsthalle in Hamburg, Germany.

La Roche Tarpéienne

This is a reproduction of “The Tarpeian Rock” of 1780 by Francis Towne.  This is a scene from the late eighteenth century in Rome of the famous Tarpeian Rock from which the Roman hurled traitors from the earliest days of their history.  Francis Towne was forty-one years old when he created this watercolor masterpiece.  He was from Middlesex in England.  He supported himself with portraits and teaching in Devon and in 1777 during a tour of North Wales began focusing on watercolors.  He created this work during a stay in Rome which was followed by a month in Naples in 1781.  Returning to England, he moved to London where he died in 1816.  This work measures 18.58 inches wide by 12.6 inches high and is in the British Museum in London.

Composition VI by Wasily Kandinsky

Composition VI by Wasily Kandinsky

This is a reproduction of “Composition VI” by Wasily Kandinsky of 1913.  Kandinsky was born in 1866 Moscow and was a lawyer in his twenties.  He began to paint only at the age of thirty when he moved to Munich and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts.  Beginning in 1911 he began using music terms for his art and started calling his elaborate works, compositions.  He became influenced by Theosophy and his first seven compositions are abstract images heralding the upcoming Apocalypse.   In Composition VI Kandinsky is imaging the Apocalypse by Water.  Kandinsky fled to France when the Nazi came to power and became a French citizen in 1939.  He died in France in 1944.  This painting is 300 cm wide and 195 cm high and is in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Lord Byron in Albanian Dress, 1835, Thomas Phillips

This is a reproduction of “Lord Byron in Albania Dress” of 1835 by Thomas Phillips.   This masterpiece was created when the artist was sixty-five years old, ten years before his death.  Phillips was well-known for his portraits and historical paintings and served as a professor of Painting at the Academy for the seven years ending in 1832.  Lord Byron had died eleven years before the painting while fighting for Greek Independence.  There were several versions of this painting.  This one is 63.9 cm wide and 76.5 cm high and is in the National Portrait Gallery in London.

The Shepherd Struck by Lightning by Jacob Becker, 1844

This is a reproduction of “The Shepherd Struck by Lightning” by Jacob Becker of 1844.  Jacob Becker was a German landscape artist who produced this masterpiece at the age of thirty-four.  He studied at the Dusseldorf Academy of Art for the eight years ending in 1841.  The next year he became a professor of genre and landscape painting at the Städel in Frankfurt.  He retained that position until his death in 1872 having moved his focus to subjects in the countryside often concentrating on the problems of the peasants.  He was very influential in the development of German art in the Nineteenth Century.  This masterpiece is in the Städel Museum in Frankfurt.

Inverlochy Castle by Horatio McCulloch, 1857

Inverlochy Castle by Horatio McCulloch, 1857

This is a print reproduction of the engraving “Inverlochy Castle” of 1857 by Horatio McCulloch.  This Scots landscape painter who began professional life as a painter of snuffbox lids and color artist of illustrations.  He began to exhibit in the Royal Scottish Academy in 1830 when twenty-four years old.  By 1838 his reputation was made and he became a full member of the Scottish Academy.  He only exhibited once in England in 1843 but maintained his showings in Scotland where he died on June 24, 1867 in Edinburgh.  The castle was built in the 13th century by John, the Black Comyn.  This wonderful example of McCulloch’s work is in the National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh.
