Phidias Showing the Frieze of the Parthenon by Lawrence Alma-Tadema, 1868

This is a reproduction of Lawrence Alma-Tadema’s “Phidias Showing the Frieze of the Parthenon to his Friends” of 1868.  Phidias is the figure in the middle with Alcibiades and his lover Socrates to the sculptor’s right and Pericles and his companion Aspasia facing Phidias.  Alma-Tadema was born and trained in the Netherlands and Belgium, notably at the Royal Academy in Antwerp.  He moved to England in 1870 and there became very famous for his incredibly realistic depictions of ancient Rome, Greece and Egypt.  He died in 1912.  This masterpiece is in the Birmingham Museun and Art Gallery, England.
