Hercules Wrestling with Death, Leighton, 1871

This painting depicts the myth of Hercules fighting off Death as he comes for the willing death-victim of King Admetus of Thessaly. Apollo had tricked Death not to take his lover Admetus but only on condition that a voluntary replacement be found for him. After many attempts, the victim was found in the wife of Admetus, Alcestis. The play Alcestis was produced in 438 B.C. and is probably the earliest of nineteen surviving plays of Euripides.
