Departure to the Hunt

This is a reproduction of “Departure to the Hunt” of 1652 by Paulus Potter. The artist was twenty-seven years old when he created this masterpiece. He was a Dutch painter born in Enkhuizen who trained with his father in Amsterdam. At twenty-four he moved to the Hague where he married and was introduced to the Dutch elite. He became quite popular for his landscapes and paintings in natural settings. These were lauded in the 19th century as precursors of Romanticism. He died of tuberculosis before January 17, 1654 when he was buried. This masterpiece is in the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin.

Fisher Family at Nighttime

This is a reproduction of “The Fisher Family at Nighttime Campfire with Turbulent Sea” of 1778 by Jakob Philipp Hackert. The artist was fifty-one years old when this was produced. He was born in Brandenburg where he was trained by his artist father and uncle. He studied at the Akademie der Kunste in Berlin and became very proficient in painting landscapes and murals. He relocated to Italy, mostly in Rome and Naples, in 1768 and in 1786 he entered the court of Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies in Naples. He received commissions from the empress of Russia and the king of France. He fled Naples in 1799 to Florence where he died in 1807. This work is 87 cm wide and 64.5 cm high and is in the Kunsthalle in Hamburg, Germany.

Ruins of Nimes, Orange and St-Remy

This is a reproduction of “The Ruins of Nimes, Orange and Saint-Remy-de-Provence” by Hubert Robert of 1789. This French artist was fifty-six when he created this masterpiece. He was born in Paris and in 1754 went to Rome in the entourage of the ambassador from the French court. He spent eleven years there and supported himself in the latter years through his work as an artist. He returned to Paris is 1765 and soon became a success in the art circles. He was imprisoned during the Revolution and was almost executed during the Terror. He was released after the death of Robespierre. He became one of the directors of the new museum of the Louvre and continued his success focusing on Neoclassical works. He died in Paris on April 15, 1808. The original of this masterpiece is on display at the Bode-Museum In Berlin.

Gothic Cathedral with Imperial Palace

This is a reproduction of “Gotische Kirche auf einem Felsen am Meer” by Karl Friedrich Schinkel of 1815. This is a fine example of the work of this leading architect of German neoclassicism. He was thirty-four when he created this painting having earned his living for ten years as a painter in Berlin. After viewing the work of Caspar David Friedrich he devoted himself to architecture and became a leading proponent of Greek Revivalism. He died on October 9, 1841 in Berlin. The original of this masterpiece is in the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and is 140 cm wide and 94 cm high.

St. Michael, Luca Giordano, ca. 1663

This is a reproduction of “St. Michael” of about 1663 by the Neapolitan Luca Giordano. This version of the tale from Revelation 12: 7-9 is notable by the high color of the archangel, the powerful thrust of his spear making contact with his opponent, and the agony of that opponent. Giordano is influenced by the similar paintings of Reni and Raphael. The dimensions of this masterpiece are 147 cm by 198 cm. This masterpiece is in the Gemaldegalerie in the Kaiser Friedrich Museums, Berlin.

This is a reproduction of “View of the Flower of Greece” of 1836 by August Julius Ahiborn. This painting by Ahiborn is a copy of the original by Karl Friedrich Schinkel which has been lost. This painting shows ancient Greek workmen constructing a temple capturing when the last block of its frieze is being heaved into place. The Greek inscription quotes Aristotle’s hymn to the virtues of battle. The original painting is 92.5 inches wide and 37 inches high. This masterpiece is in the Alte Nationalgalerie, staatliche Museen zu Berlin.

This is a reproduction of “Lake Lucerne” by Alexandre Calame of 1849. Alexandre Calame was a Swiss painter who produced this masterpiece when he was thirty-nine years old. He was began exhibiting in Paris and Berlin from 1835 after having secured a patron when he was nineteen. His specialty remained his Alpine landscapes of which this is a magnificent example. He died in 1864 and this wonderful work is in the Kunsthaus, Zurich.

Forest Path near Spandau, 1835 by Carl Blechen

This is a reproduction of “Forest Path near Spandau” of 1835 by Carl Blechen. This German Romantic painter was born in Cottbus and began studying at the Academy of Arts in Berlin in 1822 when he was twenty-four. He repudiated Romanticism in favor of Realism as his career matured. He became a professor at the Berlin Academy in 1835 and his paintings began to show a concentration on mysterious dark natural scenery reminiscent of his earlier work. In this work a young woman carries a bund le of hay in the midst of a natural cathedral. The artist died in 1840. This masperpiece is in the Nationalgalerie, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.

Lions, 1885, Paul Friedrich Meyerheim

This is a reproduction of Paul Friedrich Meyerheim’s Lions of 1885. The German artist was born in 1842 Berlin and studied under his father Friedrich Eduard He entered the Berlin Academy in 1857 and, leaving three years later, he traveled to the Low Countries and Paris. His most prominent works were depictions of lions, human portraits and humorous scenes. He returned to the Berlin Academy in 1887 where he taught for many years. He died on September 14, 1915 in Berlin. This painting is in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg, Russia.

Badende Jungen, Max Liebermann, 1898

This is a reproduction of Max Liebermann’s Impressionist masterpiece, Badende Jungen, or Boys Bathing of 1898. The artist was leading German impressionist and led the Berlin Secession from 1899 to 1911. He lived to see the advent of the Nazi for which he felt deep contempt. He died in 1935 at the age of eighty-seven years. This beautiful work is housed in the Neue Pinakothek in Munich.
