Sebastian and the Women

This is a reproduction of “Sebastian und die Frauen” of 1746 by Paul Troger.  The artist was forty-eight when he created this masterpiece having been born in the Tyrol.  He began his apprenticeship at the age of sixteen and painted his first fresco in 1722 when he was twenty-four.  His patron sent him for four years to Italy where he perfected his style and returned to Austria in 1726.  Two years later he moved to Vienna where his work became the bridge between Baroque and Rococo tastes.  He died in 1762 and this work in the Austrian Belvedere Gallery in Vienna.

Tobias Fishing in the Presence of the Archangel Raphael

This is a reproduction of “Tobias Fishing in the Presence of the Archangel Raphael” of 1752 by Francesco Guardi.  Francesco Guardi was one of the last of the Venetian school of painting and was forty years old when he produced this masterpiece.  His most important works date from the years following this effort and his quick brushwork was to have an influence on the French Impressionists of the following century.  He died in 1793, four years before the death of the Venetian Republic.  This painting is in the Church of the Angel Raphael in Venice and measures 140 cm wide and 80 cm high.

This masterpiece was created in about 1660, the work of Mattia Preti. The artist died in 1699 La Valleta, Italy when he was eight-six years old. This oil on canvas is now displayed in the Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte in Naples, Italy.

The Creation of Adam, Michelangelo, 1512

This is one of the works of the Frescoes in the Sistine Chapel.  Michelangelo Buonarroti, who died in Rome in 1564 at the age of 89 years, was commissioned by Pope Julius II della Rovere in 1508 to repaint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel which had been frescoed earlier by Piero Matteo d’Amelia with a star-spangled sky.  The masterwork was completed between 1508 and 1512.

Death on a Pale Horse by Benjamin West of 1796

This masterpiece of the American master Benjamin West was created in 1796.  It depicts the destruction depicted in the Christian Apocalypse.  It currently is in the Detroit Institute of Arts.

Benjamin West was born in 1738 Pennsylvania and was self-taught.  He began painting at the age of eight and was patronized by Dr. William Smith from the time he was eighteen.  He also began learning from the English painter John Wollaston at the same time.  Four years later he was sent to Italy to study Titian and Raphael and in 1763 he was commissioned by George III to paint members of the royal family.  West founded the Royal Academy of Arts in 1768 with Joshua Reynolds and he died in London in 1820.

Death of St. Sebastian by Fabre of 1789

This is a reproduction of Francois-Xavier Fabre’s "Death of Saint Sebastian". The legend of Sebastian became very popular throughout the Middle Ages, particularly after the 13th century due to Sebastian’s being the patron of victims of the plague which was ravishing almost all of europe from the fourteenth century.  Fabre was one of the most talented students of David and he died in 1832. This masterwork is housed in the Mussee Fabre in Montpellier, France.
