St. Michael, Luca Giordano, ca. 1663

This is a reproduction of “St. Michael” of about 1663 by the Neapolitan Luca Giordano.  This version of the tale from Revelation 12: 7-9 is notable by the high color of the archangel, the powerful thrust of his spear making contact with his opponent, and the agony of that opponent.  Giordano is influenced by the similar paintings of Reni and Raphael.  The dimensions of this masterpiece are 147 cm by 198 cm.  This masterpiece is in the Gemaldegalerie in the Kaiser Friedrich Museums, Berlin.

Autumn in Bavaria by Wassily Kandinsky, 1908

This is a reproduction of Wassily Kandinsky’s “Autumn in Bavaria” of 1908.  Kandinsky was born in Moscow in 1866 and was raised in Odessa.  He began painting at the age of 30 and is credited as the first artist to paint a modern abstract work of art.  After 22 years in Munich, Kandinsky returned to Russia in 1918 but found his art was not in favor.  He returned to Germany, but the rise of the Nazis in 1933 led him to remove to France.  He died there in 1944.   This 1908 composition is one of Kandinsky’s less abstract pieces and in gorgeous in its use of form and color.  The original painting is in the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.
