Washington Crossing the Delaware, Emanuel Leutze, 1851
American / German / Inspirational prints / Paintings (Reproductions) - 1 year ago - troycapc
This is a reproduction of “Washington Crossing the Delaware” by Emanuel Leutze of 1851. This wonderful dramatic historical scene was first painted in 1849 and housed in the Bremen Kunsthalle. It was damaged by fire in 1850 and destroyed in a bombing raid in 1942. This version was painted in 1850 and put on display in New York in October, 1851. It was bought by Marshall O. Roberts and has been re-created and reproduced many times. The original of this version is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Emanuel Leutze was a Germany artist who was thirty-three when he first painted this scene. Brought to America as a child, he early began to paint portraits and supported himself with them after his father died when he was fourteen. He obtained sufficient orders when he was twenty-four to study in Dusseldorf and established his reputation in Europe in the following years. He settled in Dusseldorf where he lived for fourteen years. He returned to America in 1859 and gained a wide reputation as a creation of works of patriotic emotionalism. He died in Washington, D.C. in 1868.

The Forge, Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, ca. 1817
Inspirational prints / Paintings (Reproductions) / Spanish - 1 year ago - troycapc
This is a reproduction of “The Forge” by Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, created between 1815 and 1820. This dramatic work can be seen as a glorification of the harsh work of pre-industrial workers. The pervasive darkness, vigorous brushstrokes and monumental size gives an unusual dignity to the back-breaking labor and is reminiscent of the depiction of the mythological forge of Hephaistos. This stark depiction has little distraction from the coordinated work of the blacksmiths. This masterpiece is in the Frick Collection, New York City.

Wrestlers by Thomas Eakins, 1899
Academician / American / Eakins / Paintings (Reproductions) - 1 year ago - troycapc
This is a reproduction of Thomas Eakins’ classic, “Wrestlers” of 1899. This is one of Eakins’ greatest works and the first completed genre painting. It dramatically portrays interplay of masculine muscles in a wrestling match apparently being waged in a gymnasium. It is the last sports painting of the master as well as his last study of the male form. Eakins was fifty-five years old when this was completed. This major work is an American expression of the realistic academecians yet it has subtle marks which extend it into a more modern realm. The half figures cut off by the right frame, the meandering length of rope in the background and the juxtaposition of taut and loosened skin all point to a modern eye. Thomas Eakins died seventeen years after he produced this painting which is in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Human Form by Francis Bacon of 1949
British / Contemporary / Francis Bacon - 1 year ago - troycapc
A reproduction of Francis Bacon “Human Form” of 1949. This was Bacon’s first nude painting and shows his life-long examination of the human figure in a treatment which is ambiguous and enigmatic. This figure is monumental while the technique is minimalised.
