Tres de Mayo, 1815

This is a reproduction of “Los fusilamientos del tres de mayo” by Francisco Goya of 1815.  Goya was commemorating the Spanish resistance to Napoleon’s French forces of occupation in 1808.  It was commissioned by the provisional Spanish government at the suggestion of the artist.  This painting has gained iconic status as a powerful image of the horrors of war, particularly warfare directed against defenseless civilians.  Because it breaks so profoundly from the conventions of the past, it has often been claimed to be the first painting of the modern era.  The original of this masterpiece is in the Museo del Prado in Madrid and is 347 cm wide and 268cm high.
