It was commissioned by the provisional Spanish government at the suggestion of the artist. This painting has gained iconic status as a powerful image of the horrors of war, particularly warfare directed against defenseless civilians. Because it breaks so profoundly from the conventions of the past, it has often been claimed to be the first painting of the modern era.
