Tobias Fishing in the Presence of the Archangel Raphael

This is a reproduction of “Tobias Fishing in the Presence of the Archangel Raphael” of 1752 by Francesco Guardi.  Francesco Guardi was one of the last of the Venetian school of painting and was forty years old when he produced this masterpiece.  His most important works date from the years following this effort and his quick brushwork was to have an influence on the French Impressionists of the following century.  He died in 1793, four years before the death of the Venetian Republic.  This painting is in the Church of the Angel Raphael in Venice and measures 140 cm wide and 80 cm high.

Ruins of Nimes, Orange and St-Remy

This is a reproduction of “The Ruins of Nimes, Orange and Saint-Remy-de-Provence” by Hubert Robert of 1789.  This French artist was fifty-six when he created this masterpiece.  He was born in Paris and in 1754 went to Rome in the entourage of the ambassador from the French court.  He spent eleven years there and supported himself in the latter years through his work as an artist.  He returned to Paris is 1765 and soon became a success in the art circles.  He was imprisoned during the Revolution and was almost executed during the Terror.  He was released after the death of Robespierre.  He became one of the directors of the new museum of the Louvre and continued his success focusing on Neoclassical works.  He died in Paris on April 15, 1808.  The original of this masterpiece is on display at the Bode-Museum In Berlin.

The Lock, John Constable, 1824

This is a reproduction of “The Lock” of 1824 by John Constable.  The artist was a native of Suffolk who died in 1837 at the age of sixty-one years.  He is one of the greatest English landscape painters but did not become recognized until he was elected to the Royal Academy at the age of fifty-two.  He struggled financially until then with his works selling better in France than in England.  This landscape features the lock and canal system of England which led to its industrial growth in the Nineteenth Century.  The painting is 120 cm wide and 142.2 cm high and is in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid.

Mars désarmé par Vénus, Jacques-Louis David, 1824

This is a reproduction of “Mars Disarmed by Venus” of 1825 by Jacques-Louis David.  This masterpiece was one of the last produced by the French master of Neoclassicism after forty-three years of creating masterpieces.  He began this work in Brussels at the age of seventy-three.  The monumental painting depicts the removal of the armor of Mars by the three Graces and Cupid.  The painting was exhibited in Paris just before David’s death and was hailed as the bridge between Classicism and Romanticism.  The original painting is 265 cm wide and 308 cm high and is in the Musées royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique in Brussels.

Temples of Paestum at Evening by Jules Coignet

This is a reproduction of “Temples of Paestum at Evening” by Jules Louis Philippe Coignet.  Coignet was a French landscape artist who was born in 1798 Paris.  He won a gold medal at the Paris Salon when he was twenty-six and became a knight of the Legion of Honor in 1836.  His advocacy of painting en plain air have many describing him as a predecessor of the Barbizon School.  This view of the main temple of Poseidon in Paestum wonderfully captures the warmth of the ancient stones.  Paestum is in the Italian Campania and was founded by the Greeks from Sybaris at the end of the seventh century Before the Current Era.  The masterpiece is in the Neue Pinakothek in Munich.

This is a reproduction of “View of Saint Peter’s Church” of 1841 by William Fowler the Younger.  This English Victorian artist produced this masterpiece when sixteen years old.  The precocious young artist was named after his father who was also an artist.  He died in 1867.  The church of St. Peter’s in Caen was built between 1250 and 1545.  The Eastern Apse was built by Hector Sohier between 1518 and 1545.  It is a Gothic masterpiece though the last additions show the transition to Renaissance.

This is a reproduction of “Homer” of 1841 by Jean-Baptiste Auguste Leloir.  This painting was inspired by the "Apotheosis of Homer" by Ingres and was completed when the French artist was thirty-two.  This is a Neo-classic and idealized depiction of the greatest of the Greek bards telling his tale to a varied audience before a Doric temple.  The artist died in 1892.  The dimensions of this masterpiece are 195 cm by 147 cm and it is housed is in the Louvre, Paris.

Café Terrace at Night by Vincent van Gogh, 1888

This is a reproduction of “Café Terrance at Night” by Vincent Van Gogh.  He created the work in Arles in September, 1888 and it is a depiction of the sidewalk portion of the Flace du Forum.  The café is still there, but has been renamed to Café Van Gogh in celebration of the artist and this painting.  This was Van Gogh’s first use of a starry night sky which later became so famous.   The artist was thirty-five years old when he created the work, two years before his death.  The masterpiece is currently at the Kroller-Muller Museum in Otterlo, Netherlands.

The Island of Rhodes by Ivan Constantinovich Aivazovsky, 1861

This is a reproduction of “The Island of Rhodes” of 1861 by Ivan Constantinovich Aivazovsky.   This is wonderful example of Aivazovsky’s coastal combinations of seascape and landscape and is a wonderful representation of this gem of the Aegean as the sun is near the horizon.  Seascapes constitute more than half of his works.  This Armenian artist died in 1900 at the age of eighty-three years.  He burst upon the international scene in 1842 and was elected a member of five European Academies.  He received the French Legion of Honor and left more than 6000 works by the time of his death.  This masterpiece is in the Aivazovsky Art Gallery in his natal city, Theodosia in the Crimea, Ukraine.

The Old Oak by Jules Dupre, ca. 1870

This is a reproducition of “The Old Oak” of about 1870 by Jules Dupre.  Dupre was about 49 when he painted this landscape which is an excellent example of the Barbizon School in that it shows a pronounced dramatic effect.  At the age of twenty Dupre had visited England where he was deeply impressed by John Constable.  In 1848 as a token of his fame and contribution, he was awarded the cross of the Legion of Honor.  He died in 1889.  This masterpiece is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D. C.
