Abraham Lincoln

This is a reproduction of “Abraham Lincoln” of 1869 by George Peter Alexander Healy. Healy was an American artist from Boston, Massachusetts who studied in Paris and in Rome. He began to produce portraits when eighteen years old in 1831. Three years later he left for Europe where he stayed for sixteen years. In Chicago in 1855, he returned to Europe for a second stay of twenty-one years. He created more portraits of the famous that any other American artist and returned to Chicago for a last time in 1892. He died there on June 24 two years later. This masterpiece measures 141.3 cm wide and 187.3 cm high. It is in the White House Collection in Washington, D. C.

City of Washington, 1833, George Cooke

This is a reproduction of “The City of Washington from Beyond the Naval Yard” of 1833 by George Cooke. The artist was careful to accurately portray both the architecture of the city as well as the natural contours and hills of the area. The representation of the White House is enlarged to provide balance with the Capitol and the bulk of the city lies in the low ground between the two governmental buildings. Cooke was a Southern American landscape and portrait painter who was forty years old when he created this. He died in 1849 after having contracted cholera in New Orleans. This masterpiece is 63.5 cm wide and 45.7101.5 cm high and is in the White House in Washington.

Fur Traders Descending the Missouri, George Caleb Bingham, 1845

This is a reproduction of “Fur Traders Descending the Missouri” of 1845 by George Caleb Bingham. The American artist George Bingham was thirty-four when he created this masterpiece. He was born in Augusta County, Virginia. The family moved to Missouri and Bingham’s father died when he was twelve. Seven years later he was painting portraits for twenty dollars each. He continued to paint and grew a practice in St. Louis where he was elected to the Missouri General Assembly in 1848. He moved to Europe in 1856. He returned to Missouri in time for the Civil War during which he served as State Treasurer. He became the first professor of art at the University of Missouri before his death on July 7, 1789. The original painting is 28.9 by 36.6 inches and is currently at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City.

Winter in the Country, the Old Grist Mill by George Henry Durrie, 1862

This is a reproduction of George Henry Durrie’s “Winter in the Country, the Old Grist Mill” of 1862. George Henry Durrie was an American artist born in 1820 Connecticut. He studied under the portraitist Nathaniel Jocelyn with his brother John. He became an itinerant painter doing mostly portraits but in the 1850′s began to specialize in landscapes of New England. His reputation grew in the late Fifties and his work began to be displayed at prestigious institutions. In 1861 Currier and Ives began publishing his prints which led to great fame. He died in New Haven the year after this masterpiece’s creation on October 15, 1863. This is a fine example of his work and is in a private collection.
