Gothic Cathedral with Imperial Palace

This is a reproduction of “Gotische Kirche auf einem Felsen am Meer” by Karl Friedrich Schinkel of 1815. This is a fine example of the work of this leading architect of German neoclassicism. He was thirty-four when he created this painting having earned his living for ten years as a painter in Berlin. After viewing the work of Caspar David Friedrich he devoted himself to architecture and became a leading proponent of Greek Revivalism. He died on October 9, 1841 in Berlin. The original of this masterpiece is in the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and is 140 cm wide and 94 cm high.

Beethoven, 1820

This is a reproduction of “Portrait of Ludwig van Beethoven while composing the Missa Solemnis” of 1820 by Joseph Karl Stieler. The artist was a native of Mainz, Germany and produced this painting in Munich, Bavaria at the age of thirty-nine. It became his best known portrait even though he was very prolific and painted many portraits, mainly from his base in Munich. His portraits are known for the total focus on the sitter with a minimum of distractions from the subject of the painting. Beethoven himself was fifty years old when this portrait was completed. Stieler died in 1858 and Beethoven in 1827. The painting is 120 cm wide and 142.2 cm high and is in the Beethoven-Haus in Bonn, Germany.

Two Men Contemplating the Moon, Caspar David Friedrich, 1830

This is a reproduction of “Zwei Manner in Betrachtung des Mondes” of 1830 by Caspar David Friedrich. This oil on canvas is part of the revolution Friedrich started in the art world, the movement known as Romanticism. He was fifty-six years old when this was painted. The artist is the figure on the right and is accompanied by his younger colleague August Heinrich. They are both in older styled dress which was a mode of expressing disapproval of the conservative policies in effect in Post-Napoleonic Germany. The original work is 43.8 cm by 34.9 cm and is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

A Stop, Evening Bivouac, Karl Bodmer

This is a reproduction of “A Stop, Evening Bivouac” by Karl Bodmer of 1833. This watercolor was completed after the artist’s party camped for the night on the Missouri River in what is now North Dakota. They camped on the night of November 3, 1833. Bodmer was a Swiss artist who was twenty-four when he produced the watercolor and was on an expedition with the German explorer Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied. After the expedition Bodmer returned to Europe where he died on October 30, 1893.

This is a reproduction of “The Wedding Trip” of 1841 by Carl Schindler. This painting is one of the few by the Viennese native. He died tragically at the age of twenty on August 22, 1842. This masterpiece is in the Austrian Gallery in Vienna.

This is a reproduction of “Sketch of Constance on the Bodensee” by J. M William Turner of 1842. This master artist was one of the foremost English Romantic painters of all time. He was controversial in his own day but he raised the art of landscape to rival that genre of historical painting. He not only created wonderful oils, but he also was a master of watercolors and printing. He created this wonderful work at the age of sixty-seven. He had receive formal training at the Royal Academy of Art from the age of fourteen and within eight years he was receiving enough patronage to insure his career in art. He died in 1851 in London. This masterpiece is in the British Museum, London.

Horses at the Porch by Albrecht Adam, 1843

This is a reproduction of “Horses at the Porch” by Albrecht Adam of 1843. Albrecht Adam was a German artist who produced this work at the age of thirty-seven. He was influenced at an early age by the director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremburg to concentrate on paintings of horses and battlefields. He served in the Russian campaign under Beauharnais who had appointed him his personal court painter. Adam produced a painted diary of the Russian campaign made up of 83 paintings. He died in 1862 Munich. This masterpiece is in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.

The Shepherd Struck by Lightning by Jacob Becker, 1844

This is a reproduction of “The Shepherd Struck by Lightning” by Jacob Becker of 1844. Jacob Becker was a German landscape artist who produced this masterpiece at the age of thirty-four. He studied at the Dusseldorf Academy of Art for the eight years ending in 1841. The next year he became a professor of genre and landscape painting at the Städel in Frankfurt. He retained that position until his death in 1872 having moved his focus to subjects in the countryside often concentrating on the problems of the peasants. He was very influential in the development of German art in the Nineteenth Century. This masterpiece is in the Städel Museum in Frankfurt.

Washington Crossing the Delaware, Emanuel Leutze, 1851

This is a reproduction of “Washington Crossing the Delaware” by Emanuel Leutze of 1851. This wonderful dramatic historical scene was first painted in 1849 and housed in the Bremen Kunsthalle. It was damaged by fire in 1850 and destroyed in a bombing raid in 1942. This version was painted in 1850 and put on display in New York in October, 1851. It was bought by Marshall O. Roberts and has been re-created and reproduced many times. The original of this version is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Emanuel Leutze was a Germany artist who was thirty-three when he first painted this scene. Brought to America as a child, he early began to paint portraits and supported himself with them after his father died when he was fourteen. He obtained sufficient orders when he was twenty-four to study in Dusseldorf and established his reputation in Europe in the following years. He settled in Dusseldorf where he lived for fourteen years. He returned to America in 1859 and gained a wide reputation as a creation of works of patriotic emotionalism. He died in Washington, D.C. in 1868.

Forest Path near Spandau, 1835 by Carl Blechen

This is a reproduction of “Forest Path near Spandau” of 1835 by Carl Blechen. This German Romantic painter was born in Cottbus and began studying at the Academy of Arts in Berlin in 1822 when he was twenty-four. He repudiated Romanticism in favor of Realism as his career matured. He became a professor at the Berlin Academy in 1835 and his paintings began to show a concentration on mysterious dark natural scenery reminiscent of his earlier work. In this work a young woman carries a bund le of hay in the midst of a natural cathedral. The artist died in 1840. This masperpiece is in the Nationalgalerie, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.
