The Beeches, Asher Durand, 1845

This is a reproduction of “The Beeches” of 1845 by Asher Brown Durant.  This American artist of the Hudson River School was born in 1796.  By the time he was twenty-seven he had a reputation as one of the nation’s finest engravers.  Encouraged by a patron, he began to paint in 1830 and within seven years he was focusing on landscapes with his friend Thomas Cole.  They and others embarked in the creation of the Hudson River School which believed that Nature is the ineffable manifestation of God.  Durand died at the age of ninety.  The original painting is 60 3/8 x 48 1/8 inches and is currently at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City.

Silenus and Infant Dionysos, image by Troy Caperton, 2008

A reproduction of "Silenus with Infant Dionysus" in the Vatican Museums. This is a tender rendering of the Greek mythological protector and follower of the God of Wine.  This representation of the statue is from my photograph from my recent trip to Rome.

A reproduction of “North Texas Sky”, an original painting based on the sky south of Ft. Worth, Texas in the late afternoon of December 20, 2008.  It is shocking what beauty God gives to us for free when we only take the time to notice and appreciate the handiwork of a Divine Hand.

The Creation of Adam, Michelangelo, 1512

This is one of the works of the Frescoes in the Sistine Chapel.  Michelangelo Buonarroti, who died in Rome in 1564 at the age of 89 years, was commissioned by Pope Julius II della Rovere in 1508 to repaint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel which had been frescoed earlier by Piero Matteo d’Amelia with a star-spangled sky.  The masterwork was completed between 1508 and 1512.

God As Architect, William Blake, 1794

This masterpiece of William Blake was created in 1794, as an illustration of his book of poetry, Europa a Prophecy.  However, this work is more popularly known as the Ancient of Days.  This pre-Romantic etching depicts a very Newtonian God measuring out the dimensions of his creation.
