The Lament of Icarus by Draper, 1898

The Lament of Icarus by Draper, 1898

A reproduction of Herbert James Draper’s masterpiece “The Lament of Icarus” of 1898. This is the artist’s most famous image showing the dead Icarus surrounded by weeping sea-nymphs. The work was probably inspired by Leighton’s Icarus and Daedelus of 1869 but takes an entirely different perspective on the ancient Greek myth. This image won the gold medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1900. Draper died in 1920 at the age of fifty-seven years after a lifetime of creating art which often portrayed the images of Ancient Greece and Rome.
