American / Caperton / Greco-Roman / Inspirational prints / Neoclassical / Paintings (Reproductions) - 1 year ago - troycapc
A reproduction of Troy Caperton’s work, “Poem to Prometheus”, a devotional work that combines an image of the eagle sent to torment Prometheus for his having given Fire to mankind in defiance of the deathless gods.
I will sing of the sacrifice of Prometheus,
Holy Forethought who suffered for aeons
For bringing to feeble Man the gift of Fire
Which warms us all on every frozen night.

Orpheus Leading Eurydice from the Underworld by Jean Corot of 1861
Academician / French / Greco-Roman / Paintings (Reproductions) - 1 year ago - troycapc
A reproduction of Jean Corot’s “Orpheus Leading Eurydice from the Underworld”, 1861. This nineteenth century Romantic artist probably most closely adhered to French Classicism in his work. He was a kind and generous man who died in 1875 at the age of seventy-nine years. In this work, Corot is depicting the Greek legend of Orpheus leading his beloved Erydice from Hades. This captured moment is just prior to the moment when Orpheus turns back to gaze on Eurydice. This broke his pledge to the Lord of the Underworld and his beloved faded from sight, never to be seen by moral eyes.

This is a reproduction of John William Waterhouse’s Ariadne of 1898. The original is 151 centimeters wide and 91 centimeters high and is in a private collection. This is a Victorian version of the story of the daughter of King of Midas of Crete who fell in love with Theseus of Athens and helped him kill the Minotaur and end the Cretan tyranny over Athens. After Ariadne was taken from Crete by her lover, the gods cursed her for betraying her father by making Theseus forget his love and abandon her while she is sleeping.

Icarus by Frederic, Lord Leighton, 1869
British / Greco-Roman / Leighton / Paintings (Reproductions) - 1 year ago - troycapc
A reproduction of a work by Lord Frederick Leighton, “Icarus”. This Pre-Raphaelite masterpiece of 1869 is a wonderful depiction of the preparations of Daedelus for the flight of Icarus. We see no foreshadowing of the tragic end of this great experiment. It may be an allegory of the efforts of Man to overcome his natural limitations.
