Kilauea Caldera, 1886, Jules Tavernier

This is a reproduction of Jules Tavernier’s Kilauea Caldera, Sandwich Islands" of 1886.  This French artist was born in 1844 and studied under Felix Barrias.  He left France when he was about thirty years old and never returned.  He became an illustrator for Harper’s Magazine which sent him to California.  Later he arrived in Hawaii which were then usually known as the Sandwich Islands in Europe and the United States.  He became fascinated with Hawaii’s erupting volcanoes and became the most important artist of the Volcano School.  He died in Honolulu in 1889.  This painting is in the San Diego Art Museum.
