Marcel Duchamp’s masterpiece, “Jeune home triste dans un train”, or Sad Young Man in a Train, 1912. Duchamp was a leading artist in both Dadaism and Surrealism. This is abstract depiction appears to fall between the two movements or perhaps embodies elements of both. It is a very early work closely related to the more famous "Nude Descending a Staircase No. 2." This work is more colorful but shares the mechanical nature of the painting which reflects the influence of Cubism on the young Duchamp who was twenty-five years old. Duchamp continued to influence Western Art in fundamental ways until his death on October 2, 1968. The original of this work is in the Guggenheim Museum, New York.
