Badende und weißes Pferd im Fluß, 1883, Georges-Pierre Seurat

This is a reproduction of Georges-Pierre Seurat’s “Bathers and White Horses in the River” of 1883.  This French master was born in Paris is 1859.  He attneded the Ecole des Beaux-Arts during ages nineteen and twenty and in 1883 produced his first major painting.  Rejected by the salon system, he founded the Societe des Artistes Independants in 1884 and produced his most popular masterpiece in 1886 after two years of production.  He moved into a quieter studio where he lived with a model who bore him his son before his death on March 29, 1891.  Seurat’s work became some of the most familiar of the nineteenth century and this masterpiece is an oil on wood.  This painting is in the National Gallery of Art.
