Diana and Endymion of 1822 by Jerome-Martin Langlois
Academician / French / Greco-Roman / Neoclassical / Paintings (Reproductions) - 1 year ago - troycapc
Langlois was born in 1779, the son of a miniature painter who studied with Jacques-Louis David against his father’s wishes. He helped his teacher in his masterworks and developed a style which was polished and known for its severe settings. In 1805 he won second place at the Prix de Rome and first place four years later. In 1824 he painted his teacher shortly before David’s death and was elected to the Academie des Beaux-Art shortly before his own death in 1838 Paris. This 1822 depiction of the myth of Diana and Endymion was painted in about 1822 and is in a private collection having been sold at Sotheby’s in 1989.
