Joan of Arc, Millais, 1865

A reproduction of a work by John Everett Millais, “Joan of Arc” of 1865.  This Pre-Raphaelite work attempts to capture the ecstasy of the paramount heroine of France.  The artist was born in England of a notable Jersey family and entered the Royal Academy at the age of eleven.  His “Christ in the House of his Parents” was controversial due to his portraying the Holy Family in a proletarian context.  His “Huguenot” of 1852 was produced two years later and became the model for much of his later work.  Millais married and had eight children and was a leading light among British artists until his death in 1896 at the age of sixty-seven years.
