Marius at Mintunae, Drouais, 1788

Drouais / French / Greco-Roman / Inspirational prints / Paintings (Reproductions) - 1 year ago - troycapc

This masterpiece of the French master Jean Germain Drouais was created in Rome in 1788.  This favorite student of David painted this dramatic tribute to Roman tradition during the height of the French Neoclassical period.  This work depicts the Roman consul Marius who was captured during the Teutonic invasion of Italy.  In his captivity a German soldier was sent to kill him and Marius dissuaded the German assassin by sheer force of will.  The twenty year old laureate of the Prix de Rome died five years later and his masterpiece has been in the Musee du Louvre in Paris since 1816.
