Guinea hen with chicks

This is a reproduction of ” Perlhuhn Paar mit Küken neben Distel Blättern vor dunkler Waldlandschaft mit Steinen und Marmorvase” of 1723 by Abraham Bisschop. This masterpiece was created when the artist was fifty-three years old. Bisschop was a Dutch artist, the son of Cornelius, court painter in Copenhagen. He focused on paintings of birds, portraits and landscapes in the Italian manner. Most of his paintings were large canvases. He was in the painters’ guild of Middleburg in the Netherlands in 1715 and died there in 1731. This work is 70 cm wide and 90 cm high.

The Shipwreck

This is a reproduction of “The Shipwreck” of 1775 by Hendrik Kobell. This Dutch artist was twenty-four years old when this was produced having been born in Rotterdam. He had studied in Rotterdam and England but returned to the Netherlands in 1770 when he began to study in Amsterdam under Jacob de Vos and Cornelis Ploos van Amstel. He was soon elected to the Academy after which he settled in Rotterdam. His oils and watercolors were noted for their realism. He was quite successful and died in Rotterdam on August 3, 1799. This work is 134 cm wide and 92 cm high and is at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Lecture on Anatomy by Andreas Bonn

This is a reproduction of “Voordracht over de anatomie door Andreas Bonn voor het departement der Tekenkunde van Felix Meritis” of 1792 by Adriaan de Lelie. This artist from Tilburg was self-taught and left for Antwerp in 1773 with his friend Cornelis van Spaendonck. Aged eighteen upon this move, he painted historical works and portraits in Antwerp. He moved to Amsterdam ten years later and became the darling of enlightened and progressive circles. The attention his works garnered are a precursor to the popular art genre, the Conversation Piece. In this ground-breaking painting, Lelie depicts the famous anatomy lectures of Dr. Andras Bonn in Amsterdam. This masterpiece measures 100 cm wide and 81 cm high. It is in the Amsterdam Museum in Amsterdam.

Self Portrait as a Young Man by Rembrandt

This is a reproduction of one of the first self-portraits that Rembrandt executed. He was aboiut twenty-two years old wshen he created the painting. He placed the strong light behind the figure which results in a lack of detail in the face. The young Rembrandt was also experimenting with an unusual treatment of his hair. The original of this masterpiece iis in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and is 18.7 cm wide and 22.6 cm high.

Shipwreck of the Minotaur, J. M. William Turner, ca. 1810

This is a reproduction of “The Shipwreck of the Minotaur” by J. M. William Turner of about 1810. This British warship was sailing from Gothenburg to Britain when it was wrecked on the night of December 22, 1810. Over a hundred of her crew reached the Dutch shore and twenty others were rescued by a pilot vessel. Yet Dutch authorities refused to send help to the vessel which was being pounded to pieces. Between 370 and 570 souls were lost and the 130 survivors were taken to France as prisoners of war. Turner had been working on shipwreck paintings and this one was named to take advantage of the scandal among the British public over the failure of the Dutch to rescue hundreds of people who could have been saved. This masterpiece is in the Calouste Gulenkian Museum in Lisbon.

The Night Café by Vincent van Gogh, 1888

This is a reproduction of “The Night Café” by Vincent Van Gogh. He created the work in Arles in September, 1888 and it is a depiction of the interior of the Café de la Gare. The artist had a room there and the establishment catered to night people who were down on their luck. It was open through the night and some of the clientele would sleep the night away slumped in their places. The use of vivid colors were a means of expressing the emotions the artist desired for the work. The artist was thirty-five years old when he created the work, two years before his death. The masterpiece is currently in the possession of the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, Connecticut.

Café Terrace at Night by Vincent van Gogh, 1888

This is a reproduction of “Café Terrance at Night” by Vincent Van Gogh. He created the work in Arles in September, 1888 and it is a depiction of the sidewalk portion of the Flace du Forum. The café is still there, but has been renamed to Café Van Gogh in celebration of the artist and this painting. This was Van Gogh’s first use of a starry night sky which later became so famous. The artist was thirty-five years old when he created the work, two years before his death. The masterpiece is currently at the Kroller-Muller Museum in Otterlo, Netherlands.

This is a reproduction of “The Stone Bridge” by Rembardnt van Rijn. This is the only typically Dutch landscape executed by Rembrandt and it highlights dramatic contrasts between the sun shining on trees and a cottage in the center of the work with darkening areas in both the left foreground and the right town in the distance. This is an early work of Rembrandt having been created when he was about thirty-two years old. This masterpiece is in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

This is a reproduction of Lawrence Alma-Tadema’s “Phidias Showing the Frieze of the Parthenon to his Friends” of 1868. Phidias is the figure in the middle with Alcibiades and his lover Socrates to the sculptor’s right and Pericles and his companion Aspasia facing Phidias. Alma-Tadema was born and trained in the Netherlands and Belgium, notably at the Royal Academy in Antwerp. He moved to England in 1870 and there became very famous for his incredibly realistic depictions of ancient Rome, Greece and Egypt. He died in 1912. This masterpiece is in the Birmingham Museun and Art Gallery, England.

The Girl I Left Behind Me by Eastman Johnson, 1875

This a reproduction of Eastman Johnson’s “The Girl I Left Behind Me” of 1875. Johnson produced this masterpiece when he was 51 years old. He was born into a prominent family in Maine and moved with his family to Washington in 1840 when he was apprenticed to a lithographer. Nine years later he was studying in Dusseldorf, Germany. He continued his studies in the Netherlands and Paris before returning to America in 1855. Four years later he established his studio in New York City. He was a co-founder of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1870 and became famous as the American Rembrandt due to his style and having studied in the Netherlands. He died on April 5, 1906. This masterpiece is at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D. C.
