New Rome, The Castle of Sant' Angelo, Silvestr Shchedrin, 1823

This is a reproduction of “New Rome, The Castle of S. Angelo” by Silvestr Shchedrin, 1823.  This wonderful landscape of early nineteenth century Rome was painted by the Russian painter Sylvestr Feodosiyevich Shchedrin.  The artist was born in 1791 Saint Petersburg and graduated from the Imperial Academy of Arts in his native city at the age of twenty.  He went to Italy in 1818 and there created many landscapes among the most popular was this masterpiece.  He created more landscapes including bizarre night visions which may have been influenced by his declining health.  He died at Sorrento in 1830.  This masterpiece is in the State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow.
