This French masterpiece by Claude Joseph Vernet was created in 1759.  Vernet was born in 1714 Avignon and spent twenty years in Rome perfecting his art.  He became the foremost artist in the depiction of the fluid forms of clouds and the seas.  He was recalled to France in 1753 at the command of Louis XV.  From 1762 he was universally acclaimed as the greatest French artist of his age.  He died in the year of the French revolution, 1789, and the age of seventy-five years.  This work is currently in the Groeninge Museum in Bruges, Belgium.
