The Destruction of the Turkish Fleet

This is a reproduction of “Die Zerstorung der turkischen Flotte in der Schlacht von Tschesme” of 1771 by Jakob Philipp Hackert.  The Battle of Chesma occurred on July 5, 6 and 7, 1770 near the island of Chios in the Aegean  Sea.  It was part of the Orlov Revolt in which Russian officers attempted to rally the Greeks of the Peloponnese to throw off Turkish oppression.   In the Battle of Chesma, the Turkish fleet was destroyed and the Russians were able to control the Aegean for some years.  This also sparked the rebellion against Turkish rule of non-Greek Christian peoples of the Balkans.  This work is 220 cm wide and 162.5 cm high and is in the Hermitage State Museum in St. Petersburg.

Composition VI by Wasily Kandinsky

This is a reproduction of “Composition VI” by Wasily Kandinsky of 1913.  Kandinsky was born in 1866 Moscow and was a lawyer in his twenties.  He began to paint only at the age of thirty when he moved to Munich and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts.  Beginning in 1911 he began using music terms for his art and started calling his elaborate works, compositions.  He became influenced by Theosophy and his first seven compositions are abstract images heralding the upcoming Apocalypse.   In Composition VI Kandinsky is imaging the Apocalypse by Water.  Kandinsky fled to France when the Nazi came to power and became a French citizen in 1939.  He died in France in 1944.  This painting is 300 cm wide and 195 cm high and is in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Horses at the Porch by Albrecht Adam, 1843

This is a reproduction of “Horses at the Porch” by Albrecht Adam of 1843.  Albrecht Adam was a German artist who produced this work at the age of thirty-seven.  He was influenced at an early age by the director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremburg to concentrate on paintings of horses and battlefields.  He served in the Russian campaign under Beauharnais who had appointed him his personal court painter.  Adam produced a painted diary of the Russian campaign made up of 83 paintings.  He died in 1862 Munich.  This masterpiece is in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.

New Rome, The Castle of Sant' Angelo, Silvestr Shchedrin, 1823

This is a reproduction of “New Rome, The Castle of S. Angelo” by Silvestr Shchedrin, 1823.  This wonderful landscape of early nineteenth century Rome was painted by the Russian painter Sylvestr Feodosiyevich Shchedrin.  The artist was born in 1791 Saint Petersburg and graduated from the Imperial Academy of Arts in his native city at the age of twenty.  He went to Italy in 1818 and there created many landscapes among the most popular was this masterpiece.  He created more landscapes including bizarre night visions which may have been influenced by his declining health.  He died at Sorrento in 1830.  This masterpiece is in the State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow.

The Shepherd's Concert by Wojciech Gerson, 1862

This is a reproduction of Stanislas Lepine’s “The Shepherd’s Concert” of 1862.  This is an intimate rendition of country life in Poland.  This masterpiece was in the Kroneberg Collection but was lost in World War II.  It was found in a sale on January 21, 2004 and restored to the Polish nation.  The artist was born in 1831 Warsaw.  He graduated from St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, returned to Warsaw and left for Paris in 1850 for further studies.  He established a school in Warsaw in 1858 and was made a professor of the St. Petersburg Academy in 1878.  He died in Warsaw at the age of seventy, never seeing the resurrection of his native land into an independent country.  This is a fine example of his work and it is in the Royal Castle, Warsaw, Poland.

Lions, 1885, Paul Friedrich Meyerheim

This is a reproduction of Paul Friedrich Meyerheim’s Lions of 1885.  The German artist was born in 1842 Berlin and studied under his father Friedrich Eduard He entered the Berlin Academy in 1857 and, leaving three years later, he traveled to the Low Countries and Paris.  His most prominent works were depictions of lions, human portraits and humorous scenes.  He returned to the Berlin Academy in 1887 where he taught for many years.  He died on September 14, 1915 in Berlin.  This painting is in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg, Russia.

Frenzy of Exultations by Wladyslaw Podkowinski, 1893

This is a reproduction of Wladyslaw Podkowinski ‘s Symbolist masterpiece “Frenzy of Exultations” of 1893.  It is the premier work of Polish Symbolism prior to the re-establishment of the nation in 1918.  The artist began the work in Paris in 1889 while in the throws of an intense romance.  Podkowinski utilized the Academic technique of increasingly realistic sketches.  The final version was completed while the artist was seriously ill and was displayed in Warsaw n March 18, 1894.  The picture was sensationally greeted by the public and was very popular.  However Podkowinski attacked the painting which ended the  exhibition.  AFter the artist’s death nine months later, the painting was restored and it toured Krakow, Moscow and St. Petersburg.  In 1904 it was given to the National Museum in Krakow.

Bathing the Red Horse by Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin, 1912

A reproduction of Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin’s masterpiece “Bathing the Red Horse”, of 1912.  This Russian artist studied in St. Petersburg and Moscow and also traveled to Paris and North Africa.  This work came during his period of attempting to synthesize Eastern and Western art.  He fell out of favor during the Soviet Era and died in 1939 at the age of sixty-one years.  This work is currently in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
