Knight, Death and the Devil, Albrecht Durer, 1513

Knight, Death and the Devil by Albrecht Durer, 1513.  This is one of Durer’s Master Engravings which Durer called The Rider.  It is meant to exemplify Moral Virtue perhaps influenced by Erasmus’ "Instructions for the Christian Solder".  The Riding Knight in this engraving is not drawn by either Death or the Devil from his steadfast march of the "Vita Activa", the active life.  The original is an engraving measuring 245 by 188 millimeters and is housed in the Staatliche Kunsthalle, Karlsruhe.
