Abraham Lincoln

This is a reproduction of “Abraham Lincoln” of 1869 by George Peter Alexander Healy. Healy was an American artist from Boston, Massachusetts who studied in Paris and in Rome. He began to produce portraits when eighteen years old in 1831. Three years later he left for Europe where he stayed for sixteen years. In Chicago in 1855, he returned to Europe for a second stay of twenty-one years. He created more portraits of the famous that any other American artist and returned to Chicago for a last time in 1892. He died there on June 24 two years later. This masterpiece measures 141.3 cm wide and 187.3 cm high. It is in the White House Collection in Washington, D. C.

Thomas Jefferson

This is a reproduction of “Portrait of Thomas Jefferson” of 1800 by Rembrandt Peale. Please was thirty-two when he painted the soon-to-be third president of the United States. He was native of Pennsylvania and was taught painting by his father. He was introduced to George Washington in 1787 and he made his debut seven years later with a portrait of the first president. He studied and worked in Europe on several occasions and was influenced by the Neoclassicism of David and others. He continued a successful career primarily as a protraitist and died at the advanced age of 82 on October 3, 1860. The original of this masterpiece is in the White House, Washington, D. C.

The Athenaeum

This is a reproduction of Gilbert Stuart’s “The Athenaeum” which was begun in 1796. Stuart never finished the original painting and sold his own copies of it for $ 100 each. He was forty-one when he produced this masterpiece which has been used as the template for the one-dollar bill and many United States postage stamps and other documents. Stuart went on to become the foremost American portraitist and completed paintings of the first six American presidents. Originally from Rhode Island, he died on July 9, 1828. The original of this masterpiece measures 88 by 101 cm and is in the Museum of Fine Art in Boston, Massachusetts.

Independence Hall in Philadelphia by Ferdinand Richardt

This is a reproduction of “Independence Hall in Philadelphia” by Ferdinand Richardt, completed in 1863. Joachim Ferdiand Richardt was born in 1819 Denmark and studied at the Royal Danish Academy from the age of seventeen. He received an annual stipend from the crown for the five years ending in 1852 and three years later first visited the United States. He returned to Europe where he married and had good success with his paintings. He moved permanently to the United States In 1873, to California in 1875 and finally to Oakland in 1876 where he died on October 29, 1895. This is wonderful example of Richardt’s masterful portraits of buildings and natural wonders. This is one of two of his works that hang in the White House.

This is a reproducition of “The Old Oak” of about 1870 by Jules Dupre. Dupre was about 49 when he painted this landscape which is an excellent example of the Barbizon School in that it shows a pronounced dramatic effect. At the age of twenty Dupre had visited England where he was deeply impressed by John Constable. In 1848 as a token of his fame and contribution, he was awarded the cross of the Legion of Honor. He died in 1889. This masterpiece is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D. C.
