Mars désarmé par Vénus, Jacques-Louis David, 1824

This is a reproduction of “Mars Disarmed by Venus” of 1825 by Jacques-Louis David.  This masterpiece was one of the last produced by the French master of Neoclassicism after forty-three years of creating masterpieces.  He began this work in Brussels at the age of seventy-three.  The monumental painting depicts the removal of the armor of Mars by the three Graces and Cupid.  The painting was exhibited in Paris just before David’s death and was hailed as the bridge between Classicism and Romanticism.  The original painting is 265 cm wide and 308 cm high and is in the Musées royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique in Brussels.

This is a wonderful work of the Neo-Classical Master Bougereau which he entitled, Douleur d’amour. The artist suffered the death of four of his five children and this wonderful work may reflect his grief as his son was suffering from what became a fatal case of tuberculosis.

Phosphorus and Hesperus by Evelyn De Morgan, 1889

De Morgan was a pioneering woman artist who was born in 1855.  Her work is Pre-Raphaelite and she was influenced by her uncle Roddam Stanhope and Edward Poynter.  She died in 1919 one of the most renown of women artists in the world.

Hesperus in Greek mythology was the son of Eos and Atlas and was associated with the evening star, Venus.  In its morning aspect, the planet we know as Venus was known to the Greeks as Phosphorus, the bringer of light.  In some mythological stories, these two male figures were considered to be lovers.  The original of this painting is in the De Morgan Foundation in Battersea, London.

Forge of Vulcan by Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velazquez, 1630

This masterpiece was created in 1630, the work of Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velazquez.  It displays the story of Apollo’s telling Hephaistos (Vulcan to the Romans) of the illicit love affair between Ares (Mars) and Hephaistos’ wife Aphrodite (Venus).  Apollo appears in the form of Phoebus, the bright shining one, and has a radiance about his head.  Hephaistos shows his outrage in his glaring eyes.  The dramatic moment is superbly captured by the Spanish master.  He artist died in 1660 in Madrid when he was sixty-one years old. This work is now displayed in the Museo de Prado in Madrid.

Venus Verticordia by Dante Gabriel Rossetti of ca. 1866

A reproduction of a work by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, “Venus Verticordia”.  This Pre-Raphaelite masterpiece of about 1866 is haunting and seductive.  The artist composed a poem for the work which is quoted below.  It is now displayed in the Rossetti Cotes Art Gallery and Museum in Bournemouth, England.
